About the Show

The Short Kuts Show: “You Must Learn!” — Live stories from the frontlines of the education field (a celebration honoring teacher-hood for teacher appreciation month)

May 18th, 2019

Hosted by Kiragu Beauttah and co-hosted by Dr. Kaye Wise Whitehead with DJ Leroy on the ones and twos

Inspired by the 1989 classic kut by Boogie Down Productions of the same name, –‘You Must Learn’–a rap song openly and unashamedly speaking on the limitation of the United States education system, this edition of The Short Kuts Show live storytelling experience, the second show of our 2019 season at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, took an eye-opening and also comical walk through the experiences of a group of Baltimore based educators and former educators, including; Former Baltimore City Mayor Sheila M. Dixon, Author, educator, and mental health advocate Tsanonda Edwards, author and educator Tuere Ganges, educator and healthy fresh fruit/vegetable juice maker, Juan Nance (aka “The Juice Man”), educator Tamika Peters, educator, comic, and theater director, Koli Tengella, educator Renee Tengella, educator Matt Prestbury, and educator Kizzi Smith sharing a variety of true stories of their experiences on being educators in America’s school systems.

FAMILY:   As the pandemic persists, The Short Kuts Show Narrative Therapy Initiative ~&~ Live Storytelling Experience is also persisting in its efforts in creating individual and village uplift with storytelling coupled with therapeutic practices--“narrative therapy” (or “thairapy”, as The Short Kuts Show is a storytelling project inspired by/paying homage to the hair-chair therapists of the Black American barber/beauty shop--its barbers and stylists), as we call it--positively impacting the community.
